Manchester City, Cisco Systems / StadiumVision

StadiumVision gives fans instant mobile replays

Newly deposed of their Premier League crown, Manchester City FC are looking to outflank rivals with stadium wifi and linked club content.

StadiumVision, delivered through Cisco Systems, will let visitors to the Etihad Stadium access streamed instant replays and varied camera angles through their smartphones while games are in progress.

Initially, fans will be able to access event information, with further stats and related game content to come.

Contagious Insight
Our Most Contagious 2012 report highlighted the Amplified Live trend, in which brands are augmenting experiences with digital connections and content. Manchester City have been at the forefront of this new live offering in football, linking previously with Foursquare for stadium check-ins and displaying fan tweets on a big screen. Though StadiumVision is not yet promising the reward system of the Nets/Barclays Center apps, that is likely to follow in future months.

Such close digital relationships between fans and club will help gather data for marketing and match-day essentials, such as dining demands and queuing issues.

Another benefit is an opportunity to reach out to the geek within all fans. Memorably, the BBC connected Dr Who fans to wifi at a show conference, offering content exclusively available on location. If anyone can match sci-fi fans for passion it's football followers, so remaining in constant contact on match days will help City maximise revenue and support.
