NotCo wins Most Contagious 2016 Startup award

by James Swift

NotCo, a Chilean startup that creates plant-based alternatives to animal foods, won the Small But Perfectly Formed award, sponsored by Essence, at Most Contagious on 7 December.

NotCo has developed an artificial intelligence algorithm, called Giuseppe, that analyses animal foods at a molecular level and then recreates their flavour and texture using combinations of plants.

Already the company has produced replacements for mayonnaise, milk, cheese and sausages. The food is healthier for people and better for the environment.

Presenting the award, JR Little, the global head of strategy at Essence, said that NotCo was the epitome of a startup that disrupts the status quo while also doing good.

NotCo’s founder Matias Muchnik, who had flown from Chile to London to collect the award, jokingly compared the honour to winning an Oscar before thanking his team and congratulating all the other startups that competed for the gong. ‘Food is going to look pretty awesome from here,’ he added.

NotCo beat Monzo, X.AI, Jukedeck, ReplyYes and Urban3D to win the award. All of the startups pitched their company on stage at the Most Contagious event on 7 December.
