Handset brand's new reality TV show in India gets 30,000 app ideas
Nokia Lumia has launched a contest in India called Your Wish Is My App. Running online and on Facebook, people submitted app ideas by 9 January and encouraged the public to vote for their concept. If the jury agrees that it has potential, shortlisted ideas could win up to 1 million rupees ($18,572), with runners-up receiving 300,000 rupees ($5,573) or 100,000 rupees ($1,858).
Nokia India received more than 30,000 app ideas, which ranged from a photo sharing app with filters to a fake currency detector. Each concept has been assessed in terms of its usefulness, its potential to generate revenue, originality and what makes it fun.
The nine-episode reality TV show, Nokia Lumia - Your Wish Is My App, launches on news network NDTV at the end of January. It will give those with the top 36 submissions the chance to fight it out for the cash prize in front of a panel of judges including Rajiv Makhni , NDTV managing editor & tech guru, Vishal Gondal, managing director, Disney UTV Digital, Raj Chinai, venture capitalist & co-founder, Harvard Business School Alumni Angels and celebrity chef Vikas Khanna. The winning apps will be awarded for their originality, relevance, revenue potential and practicality.
Nokia is also hosting Your Wish Is My App festivals across New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. These will give consumers the chance to present app ideas to attending judges for the chance to gain a wild card entry into the final 50 apps showcased on the reality show.
Nokia recently reported record demand for its Lumia handset: The Guardian reveals that, over the Christmas quarter, the formerly beleaguered handset maker shifted 4.4 million units. In India, the reality TV show will give the handset an opportunity to become synonymous with creativity, imagination and innovation. In fact, the whole concept of the competition is to underline that anyone can create an app and the high number of entries suggests a lively entrepreneurial spirit across India.
As for NDTV, there's a clear benefit for the channel in being involved, particularly at a time when reality TV talent shows are looking decidedly jaded and new formats are being explored in different markets. The Daily Telegraph recently reported that Simon Cowell has partnered with Will.I.Am on a new show that aims to find the next tech entrepreneur.
If Your Wish Is My App is a hit and attracts solid ratings, expect to see other reality TV shows that explore our obsession with smartphones and their potential.
