A developer has combined VR and voice command technology to create a mobile game where you progress by talking
Numinous Games has created a mystery-solving game for your mobile that combines virtual reality with Google’s voice assistant.
The game is called Untethered and is only available to download on phones that support Google’s Daydream VR platform. Numinous describes it as a ‘quirky episodic VR series mixing comics and drama into a video game you can talk to’.
You play as Taylor, a small-town radio DJ working the evening shift and kept company only by a melancholy producer. As you fulfill your DJ duties, you are drawn into a mystery that involves scared townsfolk and a man who leaves you increasingly disturbing voice messages. The first episode lasts around 30 minutes.
Though you can also use Daydream’s Bluetooth controller to open draws and interact with nearby objects, the most compelling feature is that the game requires you to use your voice to complete tasks, such as recording promos, reading lines and chatting with callers on air.
The game costs £4.79 ($5.90) to buy on the app store.
Contagious Insight /
The games we say / The reviews of Untethered say that the number of outcomes that you can affect through the voice interactions are limited, but this is a new technology and it looks like a promising one for VR.
Virtual reality lets you see another world but it is one that you can’t (currently) touch. Voice command is a neat solution to the problem that allows you to interact without undermining the immersive experience. The game also demonstrates a new use for natural language processing technology, which is worth bearing in mind.
